ABOUT TEAK
Teak is the Gold Standard for Outdoor Wood Furniture
Teak is an extremely dense hard wood with a high natural oil content that makes it the most resistant wood on the planet in terms of rot from either water or insects (they don’t seem to like the taste of all that oil). Teak is also a very durable wood that can last for decades. In fact, there are teak benches in England and India that are more then a century old and still being used everyday in public parks. Many of these benches actually had a life before they were benches as decking on old sailing ships that were decommissioned and stripped of their most precious asset, the Teak! Many other fine woods are used for outdoor furniture, but they are always compared to teak, never the other way around, and only one is used in the construction of boats to this day, Teak. It really is the standard by which all other woods are compared. While quality teak is not cheap, the long-lasting durability of quality outdoor teak furniture makes it truly a good value. Like an heirloom you can pass on for generations.
All Regency Teak ™ furniture comes untreated in its natural state. No maintenance is required, except maybe an occasional washing with a light detergent. Teak Outdoor furniture left untreated will weather over time to a silvery grey patina that many say adds elegance and grace to the wood as it blends in with the natural surroundings. Others who desire to maintain the original coloring of teak wood patio furniture can apply a Teak Preservative (we recommend Semco teak products) that will shield the pigments in the wood from the sun. Sort of like applying sun-screen to your teak furniture.
But Not All Outdoor Teak Furniture is Crafted Equally
Almost all commercially harvested teak comes from government-sponsored plantations in Indonesia that insures that no tree is harvested before its time, and all that are removed are done so with two to three replacements. So don’t be fooled when others talk about how unique it is that they get there teak from plantations. The real differences come in the selection of the best logs and what happens after in the production process.
First, only the highest quality “tectona grandis” from the heart of the tree is selected for use in Regency Teak ™ furniture. Next, and this is critical, all our teak is kiln-dried for up to a month to bring the moisture levels down to under 12%. Think of pre-shrunk jeans. This drying process ensures that Regency Teak ™ furniture will not warp, shrink or swell, even after decades of use in the most severe outdoor conditions. Properly dried outdoor teak furniture can sit year-round in your garden or on your patio, whether you live in the Arizona dessert or the Sierra Mountains.
Our oudoor teak furniture is designed for style, comfort and durability, and is made with the best construction techniques in the industry. As such, all Regency Teak™ furniture is made using mortise-and-tenon and dovetail joinery, techniques that have been used for centuries and still found to be the strongest way to join two pieces of wood. The only real change has been the precision that can be attained by using state of the art machinery. So, as you might expect, all Regency Teak™ furniture is machine-made. Now while it might sound quaint to talk about hand made products, unless your buying couture’ clothing, it is best that your outdoor teak furniture be constructed by German made machines that make exact precision cuts every-time so that all the joints will fit tightly together, even after years of use. Lastly, but not any less important, is the finishing. This is where hands actually do touch the furniture on every surface, sanding it three times with progressively finer sandpaper, until it is has a smooth as silk finish. A difference you can actually feel. Well, maybe not here on-line, but were working on that feature with our web developer.
Richly grained, clean lined and superbly strong, Regency Teak™ outdoor furniture is a modern classic.
We hope you will allow us to help you furnish your outdoor living area, patio or garden so that you can create a dream space that is all your own.
